SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Talons suffered their first loss of the 2026 Athletes Unlimited Softball League season Saturday night, falling 2-1 to the Portland Cascade at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
Portland broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth inning and received a complete-game performance from pitcher Kenzie Brown to snap Utah’s three-game winning streak.
The Talons entered the contest unbeaten after sweeping their opening series against the Chicago Bandits, but they were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities against Brown despite outhitting the Cascade 4-3.
Utah starter Montana Fouts matched Portland pitch for pitch through the first four innings before the Cascade broke through in the fifth. Portland used timely hitting and aggressive baserunning to manufacture the game’s first runs, putting the Talons in a two-run deficit.
The Talons answered in the sixth inning when Shannon Palacios delivered an RBI double to score Aliyah Andrews and cut the lead to 2-1. The rally provided a spark for the home crowd and gave Utah a chance to complete a late comeback.
Brown, however, closed the door.
The Portland right-hander worked all seven innings, striking out 10 while navigating traffic throughout the night. Utah drew five walks and put multiple runners aboard, but the Cascade pitcher consistently came up with key outs when the Talons threatened.
Fouts turned in another strong outing despite taking the loss. The Talons ace allowed just two runs over seven innings while keeping Portland’s offense largely in check. The two-run fifth inning proved to be the difference in an otherwise tightly contested pitchers’ duel.
The game marked the first meeting between the Talons and the expansion Cascade franchise and opened a three-game series between two teams expected to contend near the top of the AUSL standings.
Despite the defeat, Utah remained among the league leaders after a strong opening week. The Talons finished with four hits, including two from Palacios, while Andrews scored the club’s lone run.
Portland improved to 2-2 with the victory, while Utah fell to 3-1. The teams continued their series Sunday at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
