SALT LAKE CITY — Rookie pitcher Kenzie Brown delivered a record-setting performance and Korbe Otis drove in both runs as the Portland Cascade secured their first series victory in franchise history with a 2-1 win over the Utah Talons on Sunday evening at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.

Brown struck out 10 batters in a complete-game effort, setting a new Athletes Unlimited Softball League regular-season record while helping Portland win its third consecutive game.
The contest remained scoreless through four innings as Brown and Utah starter Montana Fouts matched each other in the circle. Fouts entered the game carrying a 13.2-inning scoreless streak and continued to frustrate Portland’s lineup early, while Brown retired 10 consecutive Talons hitters after issuing a leadoff walk.
Portland finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning.
After putting runners aboard, Otis lined a two-run single up the middle to score both runs of the game for the Cascade. The hit gave Portland a 2-0 advantage and ended Fouts’ scoreless streak.
Utah mounted its best threat in the sixth inning. Aliyah Andrews opened the frame with a single down the left-field line to extend her hitting streak to five games. Two batters later, Sharlize Palacios drilled a double to left field, bringing Andrews home and cutting Portland’s lead to 2-1.

The rally also snapped an 11-inning scoreless drought for the Talons.
Utah continued to apply pressure but was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities throughout the night. The Talons finished 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded several potential tying and go-ahead runs.
Brown made sure the one-run lead held up. The Arizona State product scattered four hits over seven innings and struck out 10, surpassing the previous AUSL regular-season record of nine strikeouts. She improved to 2-0 on the season while recording her second consecutive complete game.
Fouts was impressive despite taking the loss. The Talons ace allowed just two earned runs on three hits while striking out four over seven innings. She has now thrown complete games in both of her starts this season.
Utah also received strong defensive contributions from two players making their professional debuts. Infielder Tayler Biehl saved a run with a diving play at shortstop in the second inning, while utility player Kailey Wyckoff reached base with a walk in her first professional appearance.
The victory improved Portland’s record and secured the first series win in Cascade franchise history. After allowing 19 runs during their opening series against the Carolina Blaze, Portland’s pitching staff surrendered just two runs in the first two games against Utah.
The Talons fell to 3-2 on the season but remained in contention near the top of the AUSL standings. The teams concluded their three-game series Monday night at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
