(Saturday, March 11, 2017) – Real Salt Lake (0-1-1, 1 point, t-6th West) suffered its first loss of its 2017 campaign with an 0-2 decision Saturday afternoon at Toyota Park against the Chicago Fire, conceding a pair of goals against the run of play just five minutes apart in the first quarter-hour. Goals in the 11th minute by Fire FW Nemanja Nikolic and the 15th minute by former RSL man Arturo Alvarez gave Chicago the luxury of sitting back and absorbing RSL possession and pressure the rest of the way, sending 13,024 fans home happy after the 2017 Fire home opener on a 28-degree day in suburban Chicago. SANDY, Utah (Saturday, March 4, 2017) – Real Salt Lake began the 2017 campaign with a scoreless draw against the 2016 MLS Cup runners-up Toronto FC. In a tightly-contested and physical match, RSL GK Nick Rimando’s first half penalty kick stop proved to be the difference.
The game began in early-season fashion with neither team getting a firm hold on the game in the first 20 minutes with wind affecting both team’s ability going forward.
The game’s intensity sped up exponentially when Toronto FC Sebastian Giovinco was brought down by Rimando in the box in the 30th minute, resulting in a TFC penalty kick. Rimando saved the ensuing PK, diving low to his left, hanging onto the Giovinco’s effort. Continue reading
SANDY, Utah (Friday, July 22, 2016) – Real Salt Lake missed out on three points for the fourth consecutive home match, but was able to come back from an early deficit to earn a 1-1 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes Friday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.
MF Luke Mulholland scored his third goal of the season as RSL moved to 5-0-5 at home this season and 8-6-7 overall. It was the seventh time this season that RSL earned points from a losing position, earning 15 points overall after coming back from a deficit.
On a San Jose corner, Jordan Stewart made first contact just outside the six-yard box, knocking it down for Wondolowski for a first-time redirection from close range that found the back of the net for a 1-0 San Jose lead. Continue reading
SANDY, Utah (Tuesday, July 19, 2016) – The first visit from a European club to face Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium since the stadium’s opening in 2008 was every bit the entertaining match it promised to be. From first kick to final whistle, the 14,266 in attendance had something to keep the pulses racing as RSL fell 2-1 to FC Internazionale from Italy on a stoppage-time goal by Stevan Jovetic.
Tuesday night’s international friendly saw MF Jordan Allen sparkle in the No. 10 role, scoring RSL’s lone goal in the 18th minute. Real Monarchs DF Chris Schuler made his first appearance in an RSL uniform since July 14, 2015, when he appeared as one of eight Monarchs players on the roster for the exhibition. And in the end, Jovetic had three cracks at a game-winner and finished off the night in spectacular form with a backheel goal in the 92nd minute for the 2-1 final. Continue reading
