Rimando gets all-time MLS Save record, RSL gets win

Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT – Nick Rimando now has every cumulative goal keeping record in MLS with tonight’s addition of all-time saves, and it could not have come at a better time for the struggling club as they defeated New York City FC 2-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

 

It was in the 15th minute of the match and a Tommy McNamara shot that Rimando had no trouble with to give him 1,475 saves to pass Kevin Hartman for most all-time MLS saves. Rimando already hold the records for most wins, shutouts, starts, and minutes played.

 

On the back of a four game losing streak, the pressure couldn’t be higher on Real Salt Lake and new coach Mike Petke.  The pressure ratcheted up a bit more in the 4th minute of play when a series of sloppy defensive moves allowed Sean Okoli to put NYCFC on top 0-1.

 

The weather didn’t help things with the pitch getting very slick as snow fell for much of the first half of play.  RSL reacted to the early goal with a renewed determination and the latest addition to the Claret and Cobalt, Jefferson Savario, gave us a preview of the impact he will have on this club.  In the 38th minute Savario put the ball right in front of Albert Rusnak who took a left-footed shot to the corner of the net to level the match.

Yura Movsisyan left the match at the half after the team doctor advised that he not return because of possible head injury and was replaced by Luis Silva.  It didn’t take long for Rusnak to make more trouble for NYCFC when in the 51st minute he placed a corner kick just outside the six-yard box where Aaron Maund was waiting and headed it in to put RSL on top 2-1.

RSL defense was able to withstand late substitutions that put David Villa and Jack Harrison in the match and come away with a very important 3 points, especially with the short turn around before they play the Seattle Sounders on Saturday.
