Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT – It was an exciting match that turned to disappointment when Vancouver scored the late equalizer to leave RSL with only 1 point for their effort. After two home loses it is nice to get a result however this wasn’t what anyone had in mind. Both clubs were on the attack for the entire match. The goals both came in the second half, first with a beautiful finish off of a perfectly weighted ball from Jasper Loffelsend by Sergio Cordova, his 7th of the year that equalizer came in the 87th minute and RSL was unable to put together a response before the whistle blew.
The Claret and Cobalt came out hot with three shots in the opening nine minutes and looked like they were in on their way to an exciting night even keeping Vancouver without a shot in the half. Even with the chances they created RSL was unable to find the back of the net.
With no changes at the half and the chances still coming Sergio Cordova was able to put his club in front with his goal in the 61st minute. Vancouver took the challenge and was able to get off 9 shots in the half and it paid off with a late goal from Julian Gressel in the 87th minute of play to equalize and deny RSL the full 3 points.
Sergio Cordova kept up his goal scoring streak with his 7th of the year putting him 2 goals ahead in the golden boot race. Vancouver leads the league with equalizers late in the match. Tonight was the 13th consecutive sell out at the RioT. Real Salt Lake travels to Plano Texas next Saturday, August 27th where they meet up with Western Conference rival FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium.
