Sandy, UT – Sebastian Jaime gets a home welcome to Major League Soccer at Rio Tinto Stadium tonight. In only the second MLS match for Jaime he started tonight for Real Salt Lake, and definitely showed what he brings to the team. Jaime had a wonderful night and he had several chances, including what looked like his goal in the 33rd minute that was ultimately credited to Javier Morales.
Colorado looked like they were having trouble keeping up with the highly talented RSL side, but was able to capitalize on a crowded box in the 21st minute on a stunning shot from Jose Mari to the inside of the post to put the Rapids up 1-0. The result may not have been what they were looking for as Real Salt Lake doubled down on intensity in the later portion of the first half.
In the 32nd minute Joao Plata started the relentless onslaught on Joe Nasco as he took a pass from Ned Grabavoy and put the ball in the upper right corner of the goal to level the score 1-1. This would be the 13th goal of the year for Plata, and keep him at the top of the goal scorers for RSL.
The pain didn’t stop there as just one minute later Javier Morales put his 12th goal in net. Just three minutes until Nasco dropped the ball on the pitch and Chris Schuler found the third goal of the night for the RSL side. Nasco looked a little hobbled as he got up from the Schuler goal, and it didn’t help his state of mind as Plata took a shot in the 45th minute that was deflected off of Nasco for an own goal.
The final goal for Real came in the second half as Carlos Salcedo put his squad up 5-1 in the 63rd minute of play. This is Salcedo’s first goal in MLS, and the first for an RSL Academy and home-grown player.
There were a couple of chances late in the game, but Nick Rimando was once again dominant in the box and made sure that Real Salt Lake walked away from the night with 3 points.
The Claret and Cobalt now have 49 points behind the Seattle Sounders with 54 points and the LA Galaxy with 51 points in the very strong Western Conference.
