RSL takes advantage of the Toronto FC lineup that has not completely gelled to post a 3-0 victory. Toronto is handed their first loss of the season in stunning fashion and Jermaine Defoe is held scoreless after finding the back of the net in his first two MLS matches.
Alvario Sabario started the RSL scoring off when a penalty kick is awarded to RSL in the 10th minute as Sabario is fouled by Doneil Henry and the referee points to the spot. TFC goalie Cesar dove to his right as Sabario shot to the opposite side.
The second RSL goal came in the 28th minute as a shot from Chris Wingert is rebounded right to Luis Gil who puts it past Cesar the goal after being deflected.
Sabario put the match completely out of reach for TFC with his second goal of the night in the 55th minute with a over the top pass from Javier Morales that he put in to the right side of the net.
Real Salt Lake controlled the match masterfully with outstanding performances from the entire team. This is the second shutout for Nick Rimando this year and puts him just two away from the MLS all time record currently held by Kevin Hartman
Jermaine Defoe left the match in the 61st minute and appeared to be holding his hamstring as he went directly to the locker room. Defoe played well in his first game at Rio Tinto Stadium, but the defense of Shuler and Bortchers was just too much for him and the rest of Toronto FC.
On to the next:
Next week Real Salt Lake returns to Kansas City for a rematch of last years MLS Cup against Sporting Kansas City.
