Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT – RSL extended their unbeaten streak to 6 games as they defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps in an important Western Conference match up, with Juan Manuel Martinez opening his 2016 MLS goal account with the game winning goal.
The absence of two key RSL starters showed early in the match, as it took a while for the Claret and Cobalt to get things going without Sunny and Morales, but the now gelling defense stood firm with Justen Glad, and having a night good enough to preserve the shutout.
The lone goal came in the 55th minute when Joao Plata, who has been a star contributor this year as he has taken part in eight of the team’s ten goals this season, fed Burrito an amazing assist that allowed him to just out skill Ousted and get the goal.
The highlight of the night for Vancouver came when Tim Parker was able to deny Plata his best scoring chance when he slid to toward the post and deflected the ball out of contention for a goal.
In the end, Burrito’s relentless flair and trickery was too much for a goal-starved
Whitecaps outfit who’ve been held scoreless in their last three games and have now slipped to a 2-4-1 record.
