RSL can’t survive the Hailstorm in the Open Cup

Pierre Reedy goes over and above

Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT – Real Salt Lake began and ended their 2022 Lamar Hunt Open Cup run tonight at Rio Tinto Stadium with against the Northern Colorado Hailstorm. It was second half stunner from a Hailstorm defender Robert Cornwall. The home club dominated in possession and number of shots but when the opportunities for goal were available it looked like they beat themselves with the extra pass almost every time.

The match stayed scoreless all the way until the 70th minute, when Northern Colorado struck for a shock opener. It was a highlight-reel strike that saw Cornwall get under the ball from just outside the area and unleash an unstoppable first-time volley.

RSL’s frantic push for an equalizer down the stretch resulted in a flurry of chances, as the MLS side ended the match out-shooting their League One counterpart 15-5. But none of them were converted and Northern Colorado held on to score the huge upset in just the club’s fourth-ever match.

Not much more to say about tonight’s match. RSL had plenty of chances, plenty of possession, plenty shots but just couldn’t find a way to get the ball in the net
