Real Salt Lake goes down fighting in Vancouver

BC Place

Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT – Real Salt Lake fought hard for 90 minutes in Vancouver, but just couldn’t overcome the Whitecaps three goals, even with a late goal by Tony Beltran, and left BC Place with a 3-2 loss.

With huge playoff implications RSL looked ready for the match, and Mike Petke said that the team was very prepared for the match, but the Whitecaps played a little different, which didn’t make for an exciting game, in spite of the high score, but it did end in a result for the Canadians.

Vancouver started off the scoring when Christian Techera was the recipient of

a low cross from Jake Nerwinski and Bernie Ibini for a goal in the 29th minute.  Chris Wingert leveled the match in the 37th minute when he sent in the ball past Yura Movsisyan and caught David Ousted off balance.

Vancouver has been dangerous off of set pieces this season, and they showed why with the Yordy Renya free kick in that was headed into the post with a nice clean up by Kendall Watson in the 52nd minute to put the Caps on top again.  Reyna put the game out of reach in the 64th minute putting Vancouver on top 3-1.

RSL pressed hard in the waning minutes of the match, and Tony Beltran scored his first MLS goal in the 83rd minute, but it was just too much of a deficit for the Claret and Cobalt to overcome, as the Whitecaps bested RSL 3-2.
