Rapids hand RSL a home loss in dominant fashion

Albert Rusnak at the top of the box vs Abubaker

Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT – After RSL dealt an astounding defeat to the Rapids on their last meeting tonight there was some payback in the Rocky Mountain Cup rivalry. Colorado dominated the match from beginning to end with RSL never finding their stride through the entire affair.

Justin Miram can’t best Acosta

Things couldn’t have started off worse for the home club. Diego Rubio was able to get in fast and early putting in his first goal of the night in just the 3rd minute. With the disarray that was RSL in the first half Rubio was in the right place to add another point to the Colorado tally in the 10th minute. Andrew Putna had several big saves that kept things from really getting out of hand too early tonight.

Maikel Chang takes his shot at Acosta

It’s hard to remember when the Rapids looked this good end to end, particularly at Rio Tinto Stadium. Every time RSL looked to be making a run the Rapids were in the right spot to break things up. Corey Baird had the best chance for the Claret and Cobalt in the 33rd minute when Albert Rusnak put the ball into the box but Baird couldn’t keep the shot on frame and it went wide.

It is not clear what Real Salt Lake talked about at the half because if anything things got much worse. It only took 4 minutes for Sam Vines to beat Putna to increase the lead to 3-0 and when Braian Galvan hit the pitch replacing Younes Namli in the 54th minute he added one more to the lead just one minute later. Things went from bad to worse after Douglas Martinez initially was shown yellow in the 64th minute but moments later VAR upgraded the card to Red and he was sent off leaving RSL down a man with a huge deficit. Colorado tried to take advantage in the 67th but Galvan finds the post and then and RSL defender is able to clear the ball.

Herrera takes on 2 defenders

There were not many bright spots for the Claret and Cobalt tonight. The club was one step behind the rapids all night. Let’s hope they can find an answer to their current sluggish play in the full week they have to prepare for Vancouver.
