RSL dominates stats, but can’t find the winning shot

Albert Rusnak breaks for the goal

Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT –Real Salt Lake dominated the stats tonight with an astounding 72% possession in the first half and finishing the match with 64% but even with 28 shots on goal they couldn’t put San Jose away.

The Claret and Cobalt dominated every stat tonight with almost every playing having their shot at goal and an amazing 8 shots on goal, but the only one to make it past Andrew Tarbell was Damir Kreilach who found the ball with his head in the 54th minute and smashed the ball into the goal to put RSL on top.  It wasn’t too long after when Danny Hooesen found the ricochet off of a Rimando save with enough space to level the score.  RSL kept the pressure on San Jose the entire 90 minutes, but without the goal ahead goal they left the pitch with a draw.

Damir takes out Erickson

There were so many great moments for Real Salt Lake tonight but they just couldn’t finish when it really counted.  Albert Rusnak and Jefferson Savarino each had five shots tonight with a shot from Albert in the 60th minute that looked like it was going in but just glanced the crossbar. The woodwork also worked against Marcelo Silva in the 3rd minute of stoppage time.

It was a tough night for RSL vs the Silviu Petrescu with Mike Petke commenting about the number of times he was still giving warnings to San Jose players late in the match, visibly showing his frustration with the way the match was called.

The home team has a couple weeks off before they are back home at Rio Tinto for a 4th of July meeting with Sporting Kansas City.
