Real Salt Lake show Sporting KC first loss of the season

Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City, KS  – A very shorthanded RSL traveled to Children’s Mercy Park and showed Sporting KC their first loss the the 2016 MLS Season.  Without Martinez, Beckerman, Olave and Rimando, Real Salt Lake came into a hostile environment, and put on a show out-shooting SKC 15-9 with 8 of those shots on target. Even with Sporting KC controlling the ball almost 63% of the time, RSL was able to dominate the entire match.

Justen Glad had a fantastic match as he started in the position vacated by Jamison Olave after his red card last week against the timbers.  The squad pressed hard all of the first half with SKC unable to take a shot until waning minutes of the first 45′.

Set pieces for both clubs were few, but still accounted for most of the scoring as Justen Glad scored his first MLS goal after Joao Plata fed him a pass off of early set piece.

No changes were made by either club at the half, but Sporting stepped up their play and kept the ball almost twice as much time as RSL.

The insurance goal came in the 79′ after the ball bounced around in the box and Luke Mulholland was able to catch the keeper distracted and put RSL up 2-0.

2-0 has not been very comforting for RSL so far this year after being up in both Orlando and Portland before leaving with a draw.  It looked like tonight might be different until the 4th of 5 minutes of stoppage time referee Unkel pointed to the spot after conferring with the assistant referee on a foul that appeared to be outside the box.  Benny Feilhaber was able to easily get one past Jeff Attinella to make the score RSL 2 SKC 1.
