America First Field, Sandy, UT – Real Salt Lake continues their unbeaten streak putting away a flailing Sporting Kansas City 3-1 this afternoon at America First Field. With Diego Luna starting off the scoring in just the 4th minute of play and constant hustle the home club was up 1-0 at the half. The scoring continued in the second half of play with Sergi Solans doubling the lead in the 55th minute. Sporting stayed in the match with a 59th minute shot past Cabral but Zavier Gozo put things out of reach in the 88th minute with the insurance goal.
The first half was all RSL with a quick goal from Diego Luna in just the 4th minute of play and the high energy attack kept the chances coming. But that is all they were, chances. The Claret and Cobalt made it a habit of looking for the last pass instead of taking the shot and it showed. The best chance came when Sergie Solans broke away from the pack and headed toward the goal with only the goalie to beat but Ethan Bartlow gave his a quick jersey grab and a shove from behind that VAR said did not meet the level of denying a goal scoring opportunity. It certainly looked like he was tugged from behind but it was RSL ahead by just the goal from Luna at the half.
Solans didn’t let the slight by the official get in his way of making up for the denied goal with a shot in the 55th minute that double the RSL lead early in the second half but SKC wasn’t out quite yet. Dejan Joveljic pulled one back for his side just 4 minutes later in the 59th minute to give Kansas City a glimmer of hope. Zavier Gozo took a beating all night long as he seems to be excelling at his new role in the lineup and it was the academy product that ended any hope SKC had with a shot in the 82nd minute to give us the final score of RSL 3 SKC 1. There were so many when Real Salt Lake looked to be building a dominating performance and walked away empty handed but todays result give not just a win but leaves with club with a lot of things to work on as they seem to be in very good form.
RSL is back on the road next week when they travel to Seattle to take on the Sounder Sunday April 12 before they return home April 18th against a very good San Diego Squad.
