US Women Dominate Switzerland at Rio Tinto

US Women's National Team - Utah Sporting NewsRio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT – The US Women’s National team made a stop in the Beehive state for a friendly vs. the Switzerland Women’s National team where they dominated the entire match.

It was an exciting night for Ashley Hatch, a BYU senior, who didn’t make the starting eleven, but was available on the bench.  The hometown crowd went wild as she entered the match for her first International cap midway through the second half substituting for Tobin Heath.

Thalmann played well in the goal for Switzerland for the first half, but right after the second half began all changed.  With the amount of pressure that the US women played the entire length of the field it felt like that first goal would come at any time.  The floodgates opened just 49 seconds into the second half Lynn Williams, who was substituted in at the half for her first cap, scored her first goal for the USWNT.in her first cap scored her first goal.

US Women's National Team (USWNT) - Utah Sporting NewsIt didn’t take much longer for Tobin Heath to find the net.  She had been threatening all night and if it wasn’t for the great defensive play by the Swiss it would not have taken her until the 61st minute to put the US up 2-0.

Another substitute Christen Press was the next to make her mark when she put one in the net in the 69th minute of play.

US Women's National Team (USWNT) - Utah Sporting NewsThe final goal for the US side came in the 76th minute, again from a player that had just entered the match a minute earlier.  That was a beautiful header by Samantha Mewis who had replaced Andi Sullivan on the pitch.

Alyssa Naeher wasn’t really pressed during the match but she did make several great saves including a rocket that she tipped over the top of the crossbar on her way to a clean sheet
