Wind and rain swept through Smith’s Ballpark here on Monday night causing nearly a three hour delay in action. The scheduled double header was to begin at 5:05 PM and was changed to a single nine inning game as the start time crept later and later into the night. When the final pitch was thrown, the Bees were victorious with a 5-2 victory over the visiting Reno Aces.
Nate Smith
Bees starting pitcher Nate Smith produced a solid five innings and chalked up four strikeouts, no walks and allowed only one run on a solo shot home run in the second inning. Kyle Kendrick came in and finished the game. Kendrick was scheduled to pitch the second game of the double header and was credited with the win coming in with the score tied a 1-1. Kendrick struck out six and walked one in the outing.
Jefry Marte
The Bees were led by Jefry Marte who went 2-for-3 on the night with two hits, three RBIs and one run scored. Marte hit a two run blast in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Bees up 5-2. The home run by Marte came immediately following a pitching change by Reno. Kaleb Cowart finished with two hits, and broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out double to put the Bees ahead in the eighth. Todd Cunningham finished with two hits, a stolen base and a run scored.
For Reno, Kyle Jensen did well giving Reno a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run to left field. The home run was Jensen’s third of the year. The Bees responded with a run in the home half to tie the game, opening the frame with a triple and an RBI double. Salt Lake (18-13) then went ahead 2-1 in the third, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly following a leadoff double.
Reno (12-18) evened the game at two in the seventh. Mike Freeman led off with a walk and then stole second on a throw that bounced to the second baseman Sherman Johnson who had a little trouble handling the hop. Freeman advanced to third on a Brett Hayes flyout before scoring the tying run on an RBI single by Jason Bourgeois.
Centerfielder Todd Glaesmann had a game-high three hits for Reno in his second game with the team this year, and first basemen Kyle Jensen registered two hits for his eighth multi-hit contest.
The Bees begin a four game series with the Albuquerque Isotopes starting Tuesday night at Smith’s Ballpark.
