Toyota Stadium, Frisco, TX – Real Salt Lake left most of players normally see in the starting XI on the bench tonight as they fell to FC Dallas 2-0. On a night that saw RSL with zero shots on goal, there were still positives to take away from the match.
Coach Cassar noted that “We had a stretch we played six games in 18 days. You have to manage the players, you have to manage the staff. I thought the group of players did an excellent job working for each other in difficult situations.”
With all of the new faces on the pitch it seemed only a matter of time before Dallas would be able to capitalize on their advantage. In the 18th minute Maura Diaz took a free kick and the RSL back line believed that both Kellyn Acosta and Michael Barrios were offsides and let up on the defense, which gave Acosta a clean shot at goal to put FC Dallas up a goal.
Fabian Castillo put in the insurance goal in the 58th minute on a beautiful shot that Attinella had no chance against.
It has been a rough year for RSL’s first-round 2016 MLS SuperDraft pick Omar Holness who suffered a seizure in a USL Real Monarchs match this year, but tonight he played 90 minutes in his MLS debut.
Coach Cassar on Omar’s performance, “I thought he was great. I really do. He’s had a tough year. We have very high hopes for him, and he did not let us down. He looked like he made a big step in becoming a man out there.”
Overall, Cassar was pleased with the performance and stated “I had the utmost confidence in this group of guys to get a result here, but we did show a little bit of naivete on a few plays. But they got an experience that they normally can’t get. FC Dallas at home is a very difficult place to play. I thought our men handled themselves extremely well.”
