RSL doesn’t let up for another hard fought home win

Fireworks after the match

Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT Real Salt Lake didn’t let up from the starting whistle though a long 90 minutes to defeat Sporting Kansas City. With 4 goals by 4 different plays and a whole lot of shots it could have been much worse for the west leading club. There will be repercussions for tonight’s match with a total of 8 cards for Sporting including 2 red cards.

For the second time this year we saw something we haven’t seen for quite some time, Kyle Beckerman starting the match on the bench.  With another match coming up in just 3 days Mike Petke went with both Beckerman and Plata on the bench but you would never have know it from both the style and intensity of play.

Melia beat by Savarino

Things looked bad for Sporting early in this one, with RSL scoring 3 times in the first half even though they were able to score the first goal in the 20th minute from an messy goal form Daniel Salloi,  Corey Baird almost evened things up 3 minutes later with a shot that went wide.  Khiry Shelton took the only other shot for SKC  just a short time later but couldn’t keep the ball on frame.  The Claret and Cobalt kept the edge on possession and continued driving to the net and it paid off with Jefferson Savarino finding the back of the net in the 29th minute and then just before heading to the locker room Sebastian Saucedo put Real on top 3-1.

When the clubs returned to the pitch with no loss of intensity or shots from RSL.  Just like in the first half Sporting KC started off the scoring with a goal from Ike Opara in the 64th minute pulling SKU back withing striking distance of RSL.  But all the cards, 2 penalty kicks, one blocked from Albert Rusnak and one connecting from Luis Silva, 2 players send off and the relentless shooting from the home team was too much for them.  With the penalty kick from Luis Silva in the 90’+9′ Real Salt Lake put the game to bed with a final score of Real Salt Lake 4 Sporting Kansas City 2.

One Comment:

  1. It was an amazing night. Started out so hot, but cooled off a bit after the first half. Loved watching SKC getting frustrated with the RSL agressive play.
