Real Salt Lake defeats the leader in the west again, it’s FC Dallas this time

Marcelo Silva clears the ball in traffic

Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, UT –For the second time this week Real Salt Lake took on and defeated the conference leader.  After a high spirited match verses rival Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday and a short turn around they matched up against FC Dallas who they helped reach the top of the table in the west.

The first half of play was dominated by RSL and they got off to a quick start with a penalty kick by Albert Rusnak in the 11th minute to put the Claret and Cobalt on top.  Gonzalez got in front of shots by Corey Baird and Damir Kreilach to keep 2 of the 5 RSL shots out of the woodwork.  Savarino played an amazing 90 minutes of soccer with a goal saving header in he 71st minute then helping to put the game on ice in the 91st minute when he placed the ball perfectly for Luis Silva to add to the scoreline.

FC Dallas just couldn’t get into any kind of rhythm as RSL pressed hard all night and possessed the ball consistently throughout the match.  Even with putting in two talented subs at the half they looked sluggish with the heat and altitude taking its toll.  They will get a chance to regroup before they welcome the Chicago Fire to Plano, Texas next week.

With this win RSL improves to 8-1-1 at home and although they have struggled on the road Mike Petke is looking forward to the trip to Minneapolis to get a “road win and get that monkey off their back.”  When asked if he though the team is playing more in sync he responded that “KC after the first 20 minutes was the best soccer we have played, and tonight was some of the smartest.”  In addition to the phenomenal play at both ends by Jefferson Savarino, Nick Rimando comes up with another clean sheet after blocking 6 shots tonight.
